9/3/2023 0 Comments The green ember charactersand one that threatens a whole community of rabbit-kind. Wonderful beloved characters that we have gotten to know from the previous books in the series. but I have loved this series from the beginning. Smith knows how to tell engaging stories, and I can see why people love his tales so much! Although I don’t love it as much as I used to, it is a wholesome series that I do recommend for middle-grade readers. The Green Ember series was one of my top favorite series a few years ago. While several elements of the theme and plot weren’t my favorite, I did laugh at the banter between the characters, and the themes of friendship and hope remained beautiful. I didn’t understand why those two things were shoved to the backburner while everything else was wrapped up much too tidily. There were a couple glaring omissions in the conclusion, namely the explanations of Matron Wilder’s role and Grenda’s secrecy. I understand why the author wrote it that way, since it is a short book and he wanted to get his point across, but it still felt very rushed. While I’m a sucker for happy endings, this conclusion felt very unrealistic to me. You saw her once and only knew her for a couple days!) Additionally, having a character be, almost literally, insanely in love with a married woman felt too mature a topic for this kind of middle-grade book.Īlso, nearly everything was wrapped up neatly at the end. While it’s absolutely important to teach children the true meaning of love, incorporating a theme of “love” into this book just.really annoyed me. To me, the plot and theme felt a little.strange for a book intended for a middle-grade audience. (The characters felt a bit like bobbleheads because of how much they nod, and I don’t think someone can nod while being pinned face down on the floor). There were several sentences, phrases, and other parts of the narrative that I wanted to edit while reading. (Though, I do understand that I’m not exactly the target audience for this series anymore.) However, there were several elements that weren’t my personal favorite. Jo was one of my favorite characters from the Green Ember series, and overall, this was an enjoyable mystery set during the events of Ember Rising.
